Gordon and Sarah Brown were among the guests at the wedding of former home secretary David Blunkett, who married his partner in Sheffield on Saturday.

The Prime Minister watched Mr Blunkett wed Dr Margaret Williams at the Central Methodist Church in their home town.

The couple are now spending a few days in Shropshire near where Mr Blunkett went to boarding school, in advance of a proper honeymoon later this year.

The pair were both divorced with children from previous relationships.

Mr Blunkett, who is MP for Sheffield and a former education secretary, has four sons and Dr Williams three daughters in their late teens.

The couple got engaged in January.

Cup of tea

Mr Blunkett said: "We are very happy that both of us have found love, friendship and contentment. We are both very lucky to have such wonderful family, friends and acquaintances."

He added that they were not planning to leave the steel city.

"Given my plans to stand again in the General Election, we will not be uprooting our homes or our routine and Margaret will be continuing her work as a GP in the city," he said.

A spokesperson for Mr Blunkett said the new husband and wife were "delighted" that the Prime Minister and his wife had taken time out from their schedules to attend the ceremony and stay for a cup of tea afterwards.
