Elderly man killed in flat blaze

An elderly man has died in a flat fire in Doncaster.

Fire crews were called to the blaze, which started in the living room of the first-floor flat in Market Place, Tickhill, on Monday night.

A South Yorkshire fire service spokesman said the man, in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the flat.

The spokesman added the property had smoke alarms but they appeared to have been disconnected. The cause of the blaze is not thought to be suspicious.

Group manager Darren Staniland said: "A full investigation into the cause of the fire will start but at present it would appear to have been a terrible and avoidable accident."
