Weather 'to blame' for dead fish

Waterways in South Yorkshire are being treated after hundreds of fish died from the effects of warm weather.

The Environment Agency said hundreds of dead fish were found in the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Canal, between Swinton Lock and Mexborough Lock.

It said many more were "in distress and struggling to breathe" because of a collapse in water oxygen levels.

The agency said a combination of high temperatures and low water flows had resulted in the collapse.

Hydrogen peroxide has been added to the water to increase oxygen levels and agency officers are monitoring the situation.
