Sponsored walk for attacked boys

Members of a South Yorkshire community have taken part in a 10-mile sponsored walk to raise money for two boys who were attacked.

A nine-year-old boy was found covered in blood in Edlington, near Doncaster, in April.

Police later found an 11-year-old boy unconscious nearby. Two brothers aged 10 and 11 are facing charges of attempted murder and robbery.

The walkers hope to raise thousands of pounds for the attacked boys.

Community 'hit hard'

A bank account for them has been set up by Fulton Foods after a friend of the boys' family, who works at the Edlington branch, told the firm's managing director about the assaults.

The firm and the local Royal British Legion social club each donated £500 to the account to start it off.

Jane Perrins, who manages the shop in Edlington, said: "This has hit the community really hard and we just want to do whatever we can to try and help the boys and their families."

Some of the walkers said they hoped the money would pay for the boys and their family to go on holiday.

Sandra Rhodes-Nixon told BBC News that 50 people took part in the walk and they hoped it would raise "several thousand pounds".

She said: "We are going to keep putting money into this fund, keep raising as much money as we possible can.

"The fund will stay open until the end of July and then it's up to the parents what they want to do with the money."
