Electric fire accident killed man

An elderly man who lived alone died in a fire at his Sheffield home after knocking over an electric heater.

The 81-year-old man died in the bungalow on Shipton Street in the Upperthorpe area of the city on Friday evening, firefighters said.

They were called to the property by the man's carer and quickly put out the small fire in the room.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said it was a reminder of the need to take care with all electrical equipment.

An initial check of the property indicated there was no smoke alarm fitted.

Ade Robinson from the fire service said: "Just a few days before Christmas, this incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers of fire.

"We want people to take extra care at this time of year, especially when using heaters, electric blankets and Christmas decorations that can increase the risk of fire.

"Most importantly, people should ensure they have a working smoke alarm in their home."
