Arrest as girl, 12, dies in road

A 12-year old girl has died and a 16-year old girl is critically ill after they were hit by a car as they crossed a road in South Yorkshire.

Both girls are from Owston Ferry in the Isle of Axholme and were crossing at the junction of Alexandra Street and King Edward Road in Thorne.

An 18-year old driving a Peugeot 306 was arrested and bailed on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The older girl suffered severe head and internal injuries and is in hospital.

The 12-year-old girl died at the scene, with severe head and internal injuries.
