The family of a South Yorkshire Pc who died in a traffic collision have paid tribute to their "rock".

Glen Howe, 48, was on duty when his motorbike collided with a bin lorry in Sheffield on Friday.

The family statement said: "Glen was our rock, he protected us from the bad things in life."

Police are looking for more information and would like to speak to the female driver of a small silver car who witnesses say stopped at the scene.

South Yorkshire Police said Pc Howe joined the force in 1980 and lived in Sheffield.

His wife, Linda, and children Donna, 24, and Jason, 20, said: "He was also a very good cop who loved his job immensely. He always said, 'What more could I want? I have my family and my biggest passion - riding motorbikes - while getting paid for it. Perfect!'

"When he said family, we often wondered, 'which family?' Us or the police?

"Not only was he a husband and dad, he was our best friend. Our hearts will always be broken but the memories will last forever."

Pc Howe's funeral will take place on Tuesday in Sheffield.

The driver of the lorry, a 31-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but later released on bail.
