Landslide blocks busy train line

Engineers work to shore up the land and secure the line.

A double landslide has temporarily closed a busy commuter train line through the Pennines.

Heavy rain at the weekend caused mud slips between Sheffield and Stockport.

A Network Rail spokesman said they were contacted on Sunday morning by a woman who saw "water rushing down the line" in the Hope Valley area.

Engineers are clearing the tracks and using 500 tonnes of stone to shore up the land. The line is expected to open on Tuesday morning.

Replacement bus services are operating for the hundreds of commuters affected.
