A police motorcylist has been killed in an accident involving a waste truck while he was on duty in Sheffield.

Accident investigators spent much of Friday afternoon at the scene of the crash in Prince of Wales Road, which was closed for several hours.

South Yorkshire's Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes said the dead officer was an "outgoing family man", who was well-known throughout the force.

"As you can imagine we are all very distressed by this," he told BBC News.

Mr Hughes said: "Sadly this is an incident involving a serving and on-duty motorcyclist with South Yorkshire Police who has been killed in the execution of his duties.

"He is going to be very much missed by his colleagues.

"I am confident, having visited the scene, that the professionalism of my colleagues will make sure the matter is dealt with properly.

"That is as important for the driver of the heavy goods vehicle and his family as it is for our officer and his family."
