Cathedral service for campaigner

Adrian Sudbury
Mr Sudbury was diagnosed in 2006

A public memorial service is to be held for a campaigning journalist who spent the last few months of his life raising awareness about bone marrow donation.

Adrian Sudbury, 27, who died from leukaemia in August, was described by the prime minister as a "true hero".

Mr Sudbury wrote a blog throughout his illness sharing his experiences.

A private family funeral has already been held and a celebration of his life will take place at Sheffield Cathedral on 16 October.

The Huddersfield Examiner journalist was diagnosed with two types of leukaemia. A bone marrow transplant proved unsuccessful and doctors said the disease was terminal.

He was told in May that the leukaemia had returned and he decided not to have any further treatment.

He had vowed to raise the profile of bone marrow donation for others to have a chance at life and during his campaign he met Gordon Brown.

The prime minister said Mr Sudbury's selflessness and courage made him an inspiration to others.
