The Post Office has identified dozens of sites for closure

Dozens of post offices have been listed for closure across South and West Yorkshire as the company seeks to cut the number of its branches.

The Post Office started a seven-week consultation on its proposed closures of 55 branches.

The company said the consultation was "not a forum for debate" but designed to allow officials to make decisions.

Watchdog Postwatch said it would be giving the company relevant feedback on the plans.

The company has published a list of 55 branches which are facing closure.

The list includes the Smithies "outreach" post office in Barnsley which is to be trialled on flexible hours although its future depends on performance and usage, officials said.

'Informed decisions'

The public consultation period has now begun and the company said all representations should be received by 22 September.

The Post Office issued a statement which said: "The purpose of this local public consultation is to obtain views on Post Office Ltd's proposals to ensure that the branches that are ultimately selected for closure are appropriate.

"From the outset of the Network Change Programme, Post Office Ltd has made it clear in its communications that the programme is not designed to provide a forum for debate on whether branches should close.

"It is about ensuring that Post Office Ltd has the best available knowledge to allow it to make the most informed decisions about which branches should close."

In a statement Post Watch said: "Post Watch accepts the rationale for change.

"It is important that this happens in a way that minimises customer inconvenience and confusion. That means Post Office Ltd's decisions must be sensible and public consultation meaningful. Our priority is to ensure this is the case."
