A 17-year-old shot dead in Sheffield in a possible gang-related attack has been identified by police.

Tarek Chaiboub was shot in a barber's shop on Spital Street, in Burngreave, on Friday afternoon.

Ch Supt Paul Broadbent, who is leading the murder investigation, said he believed the teenager was carrying a gun at the time he was killed.

A post-mortem examination revealed Tarek died from injuries sustained when he was shot in the back.

The teenager, who lived in the Wincobank area of the city, was known locally as GT and had two sisters and a brother.

Since the shooting extra officers have been patrolling the area and carrying out house-to-house inquires.

Police said they were pursuing some positive information from members of the public about the shooting, which could be gang-related.

Mr Broadbent said: "In my opinion there may well be a gang element involved in this particular crime."

The senior officer said he could not yet confirm reports that the victim had been released from hospital a week earlier after a knife attack on him.

Mr Broadbent admitted the dead teenager was known to police before his death and said the investigation was looking at if it was a gang-related attack.

The officer added: "This is a tragic, awful, loss of life. This was someone's son, brother."

He also urged people who knew Tarek not to take the law into their own hands or use violence as revenge.
