A council worker from South Yorkshire has been rewarded for his winning ways by scooping a top spot in the annual Council Worker of the Year awards.

Neighbourhood manager Pat Hagan, who works for Doncaster Council, has been recognised for the work he did as flood waters swamped Toll Bar.

Mayor Martin Winter said Mr Hagan was a "shining example" for the commitment shown by many of the council's staff.

Mr Hagan won the Care and Commitment category of the national competition.

In a statement on Doncaster Council's website Mr Hagan's dedication to his work and the people who depended on his effort was recognised.

High praise

"Pat was a key figure when the floods hit Toll Bar in Summer 2007 and worked tirelessly in a variety of roles.

"Since then, Pat and his team have turned what was a response to an emergency into a pioneering engagement programme working closely with the local community to deliver highly successful activities and winning praise across all age groups."

Mr Hagan's work approach was said to be "one of caring and compassion".

A council spokesman said: "He is a quiet and gentle man who seeks no glory for the work that he does, but the effect that he has makes a real and positive impact on people's lives."
