Man's death prompts debt advice

Debt advice experts in South Yorkshire have urged people not to suffer in silence over cash problems after an inquest heard a man was found hanged.

Part-time postman Duncan Wilby, 39, of Barnsley was £1,500 in arrears with a re-mortgage of £24,000 and facing having his home repossessed.

Alexer Walker, of Sheffield's Citizens Advice debt unit, said more and more people were facing problems.

"There are more people coming in with unsustainable situations," she said.

Ms Walker said there were more people coming for debt advice and more people approaching the county court duty desk for advice on mortgage repossessions.

"There are more people with unsustainable situations than there were perhaps two years ago.

"But it's always the case that the earlier you seek advice, the more we can do about it.

"Even if a situation does look dire, there will always be options.

"This recent case reflects what we as debt advisors know is that generally the situations that end up the worst are where people have not even discussed the situation with friends and family, let alone sought professional advice."
