The mother of a young father stabbed to death at a nightclub has warned that "knives are more deadly than guns".

Brett Blake, 23, of Longley, Sheffield, died after being attacked at the Uniq club in Carver Street on Saturday.

His mother Jacqueline Nicholson said: "Something should be done to stop our sons and daughters dying like this."

A 23-year-old Sheffield man arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody. A 19-year-old Rotherham woman has been released on bail.

South Yorkshire Police said an application would be made to magistrates on Tuesday for a warrant of further detention.

Two other men, both in their 20s, also suffered stab injuries during the incident in the early hours of Saturday.

One of the injured men works at the club in Carver Street and was treated in hospital before being released.

The second man underwent surgery for hand injuries and was detained in hospital.

'Mother's nightmare'

In a statement released by South Yorkshire Police, Ms Nicholson said her son had been "devoted" to his girlfriend and their baby.

"I can't believe Brett has gone," she said.

"This is every mother's nightmare and something should be done to stop our sons and daughters dying like this.

"Knives are more deadly than guns. Knives are easier to get hold of and many more young people seem to be killed by them than guns.

"Nightclubs are supposed to stop people carrying knives inside but they are a lot easier to conceal than guns.

"I believe that as soon as somebody carries a knife their whole attitude changes.

"Arguments can develop when young people have been drinking but if they are unarmed they are more likely to back down.

"But if someone is carrying a knife it makes them braver. As soon as trouble starts, the knife comes out and it escalates from there."
