Builders unearth bomb at factory

Part of a factory was evacuated in Barnsley after construction workers unearthed an unexploded shell.

Police cordoned off a 100-metre zone around the Koyo Bearings factory in Elmhirst Lane, Dodworth, after the discovery at lunchtime on Friday.

Builders preparing foundations at one end of the factory dug up the device.

After about three hours, army bomb disposal experts from Catterick removed the device, an armour-piercing round which contained no explosives.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it had been safe for most of the factory to continue operating during the incident.
