Boys charged over student attack

Two teenagers have been charged over an assault in Sheffield city centre which left a student with life-threatening head injuries.

Police said the 21-year-old was hurt during a confrontation between several people on West Street in the early hours of Wednesday.

He is said to be in a stable condition at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Two boys aged 15 and 16 will appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court, charged with serious assault, on Friday.

An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl who were questioned over the incident have been released on bail while inquiries continue.

The injured man's family, from North Yorkshire, are at his bedside.

South Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
