Heart expert dies in US accident

An eminent heart expert and his GP wife from South Yorkshire have been killed in a motorbike accident during a family holiday in Florida.

Dr Walter Rhoden, 47, a consultant cardiologist at Barnsley General Hospital died in Orlando along with his wife, Dr Katherine Phipps, 45.

The pair, from Hoyland, died when they were thrown from a motorcycle in a collision with a truck on Sunday.

The couple's three teenage children were at their hotel at the time.

Total tragedy

Florida Highway Patrol said the fatal accident happened on the State Road A1A in North Volusia County.

Mr and Mrs Rhoden's children are believed to have been flown home by a relative.

A spokesman for Barnsley General Hospital confirmed the couple had been killed in the accident.

Mrs Rhoden, who was a GP in Wath, was deputy medical director of Barnsley Primary Care Trust.

The Foreign Office said it had been informed of their deaths.
