A mother has described how a rottweiler "pounced on and mauled" her daughter, leaving her scarred for life.

Chloe Grayson, aged nine, needed surgery on her face after being attacked at a New Year's Eve party at a neighbour's house in Rotherham.

Police are investigating and have seized the dog, a two-and-a-half year-old male called Bully.

Mother Nicola is now calling for tighter controls on rottweilers and their owners.

The attack came just three days after 13-month-old Archie-Lee Hirst was killed by a rottweiler in Wakefield.

He died on 28 December after being savaged at his grandparents' home by their pet, which was later shot dead by a police marksman.

In the Rotherham attack, Chloe Grayson's parents managed to fight off the 10-stone animal.

Mrs Grayson said the dog was owned by her neighbours in South Anston and had been roaming around the house during the gathering.

Chloe had been playing upstairs before she came down to the kitchen for a drink.

She said: "The dog was about a foot away and it just pounced on and mauled her. It bit her and ragged her around the kitchen.

"Chloe was screaming. It was terrifying. I got hold of her and tried to stop the bleeding."

Her daughter was taken to Sheffield Children's Hospital where she underwent plastic surgery.

Although the dog was taken away by police, it has not yet been decided whether it should be put down.

Mrs Grayson said: "The breed are proving to be vicious. They are attacking and mauling children and it's not going to stop."

Supt Keith Lumley, from South Yorkshire Police, said: "The animal has been seized and is being cared for by South Yorkshire Police as part of an ongoing investigation.

"The owner of the animal is co-operating with the investigation.

"This is the first time an incident involving this particular animal has come to our attention."
