An 80-year-old man has been seriously injured in a crash between a Sheffield supertram and a car.

It took firefighters 20 minutes to cut the elderly passenger out of the crushed car after the accident at Owlthorpe Greenway on Tuesday morning.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said they believed the car had turned into the path of the tram and was pushed up to 20 metres along the tramline.

The injured man was airlifted to hospital by Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

A woman, who was driving the car, was also taken to hospital with minor injuries following the accident.
