Scrap yard death referred to IPCC
Jamie Hatfield
Jamie's family said he was a "fantastic, fun-loving" person
The death of a teenager at scrap yard has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The body of Jamie Hatfield, 18, was found in the yard, close to Leach Lane in Mexborough, on Saturday evening. He had spent the night out with friends.

Police said a call was received late on Friday about an incident which may relate to his death but officers found nothing at the scene.

Discussions as to whether the IPCC want to investigate are under way.

"South Yorkshire Police believes it is important to establish whether this call was linked to the circumstances surrounding Jamie's death," a spokesman said.

"Officers are in close contact with Jamie's family and are keeping them fully informed of the progress of the investigation."

A post-mortem examination showed the teenager died from injuries he sustained in a fall. An inquest into his death will be opened in Doncaster on Wednesday.
