Roof of church destroyed in blaze
A South Yorkshire church has been seriously damaged in a fire.

Up to 30 firefighters tackled the blaze which began in the hall at Lundwood Church in Barnsley just before 1400 BST on Thursday.

Eight people were forced to take shelter in the church until they were led to safety by firefighters.

The church's Reverend, James McCaskill, was featured last year on Channel 4 series Priest Idol, trying to boost the numbers in his congregation.

Equipment destroyed

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said much of the church's contents was destroyed by the fire.

He said: "The church hall roof is gone, the walls are still sound, but a lot of the contents of the church, a lot of the scout equipment (was destroyed).

"There is the odd little thing that has survived through luck, but they have lost a lot of gear and the use of the building for quite a while I think."
