Clifton Park Museum in Rotherham reopens on Saturday after two years of restoration work costing £3m.
The work included repairs to the roof, windows, heating systems and electrics of the Grade II listed building.
A lift has been installed and the museum has been redecorated in the exact colour scheme used when it was built as a Georgian country house.
Despite being closed, the museum was shortlisted for the Gulbenkian Prize for best UK museum in 2003 and 2004.
New displays and interactive features will stand alongside old exhibits at the refurbished museum, which boasts a new cafe with outdoor terrace overlooking Clifton Park.
Rotherham council cabinet member for education, culture and leisure, Georgina Boyes, said: "Clifton Park Museum is now a top-grade historic visitor attraction fit for the 21st Century."
