Rotherham councillor Mahroof Hussain has been appointed to one of the government working groups set up in the wake of the London bombings.
The groups are considering how the government and Muslim communities can work together to prevent extremism.
The committee Mr Hussain is on is looking specifically at education.
Following his appointment by the Home Office, he said he welcomed the chance of contributing towards a solution to a "very difficult situation."
Mr Hussain, 37, is a magistrate and has represented the Boston Castle ward of Rotherham Council since 2002.
"This is a difficult time for Britain," he said. "The evil of terrorism must be rooted out and destroyed."
