Students take award for top union

There are 24,000 students at Sheffield University
Sheffield University has the best students' union in Britain, according to a trade magazine.

Club Mirror has given the Sheffield union its Students' Union of the Year award for 2004.

The Sheffield Union provides entertainment and catering to the university's 24,000 students.

It employs 550 people and operates seven bars, a coffee shop chain, two retail outlets and a cinema as well as promoting live music events.

Stephen Hubbard, director of commercial services at Sheffield Union, said: "The union is a focal point of Sheffield University life.

"Our success is a direct result of team effort and enthusiasm at all levels of the organisation."
