John Ryan admits he wants to come on as a striker

The owner of a promotion-chasing football club is planning to make a substitute appearance in their last game of the season.

John Ryan, 52, registered himself as a player with Doncaster Rovers ahead of the March deadline.

He is set for a place on the bench for the Conference club against Hereford United on Saturday.

Rovers' are yet to confirm what position their millionaire benefactor will play, but he is expected to appear for the last five minutes.

At 52 years and 11 months old, Mr Ryan will become the oldest player to ever turn out for a professional club in England.

Brighton manager Neil McBain holds the current record.

Confidence high

He appeared during a player shortage in 1947 at the age of 52 years and four months.

Doncaster Rovers currently sit third in the Football Conference and are guaranteed a place in the play-offs.

The title - and automatic promotion - has already been won by Yeovil.

Mr Ryan says he hopes manager Dave Penny will send him on as a striker.

He told BBC Look North: "It has always been an ambition of mine and I said at the start of the season that I fancy playing in a game.

"I've always been lucky, so I fancy myself to score."
