Man arrested after Somerset crash injures seven people

A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after seven people were hurt in a collision involving three cars on the A303 in Somerset.

Police believe a lorry travelling towards Ilminster was overtaken by a Peugeot 206 car which appeared to lose control and collide with two cars.

The arrested Peugeot driver has been released on bail pending inquiries.

It was initially reported that four people were injured in the crash which happened at 1700 BST on Friday.

The woman driver of a Vauxhall Corsa involved in the crash was taken to Frenchay Hospital, in Bristol, with a fractured skull. Her injuries are no longer considered life-threatening.

The four people in the Peugeot were also taken to hospital.

Road closure

One person was taken to Dorchester Hospital, Dorset, with a broken sternum, fractured pelvis and damaged vertebrae.

Another was taken to Yeovil District Hospital where his condition is stable.

The two others were released after treatment at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.

The two people travelling in a Nissan Primera were not seriously hurt.

The A303 was closed between the junctions for the A358 and the A30 while police examined the scene.
