Sir Chris Clarke remembered at service in Wells

Sir Chris branded Council Tax "evil"

A memorial service has been held for Sir Chris Clarke, a former leader of Somerset County Council.

The service for Sir Chris, who died of cancer just before Christmas at the age of 68, was held at Wells Cathedral.

He was knighted in 2005 for services to local government, but was always known simply as Chris.

The outspoken Liberal Democrat, who was council leader between 1993 and 2001, once branded Council Tax "evil" and developed an Axe the Tax campaign.

He went on to lead his party at the Local Government Association between 2001 and 2005, and was also acting chairman of the South West Regional Arts Council.
