Taxi marshal scheme is extended

An extension to the taxi marshals scheme in Bath is being hailed as a success by police, taxi drivers and by council officials.

The eight-week trial in Kingsmead Square is in addition to the existing permanent service at Orange Grove.

A Bath and North East Somerset Council spokesman said the marshals were making a big difference to the safety of both cab drivers and their customers.

The service is publicised by the use of messages sent to mobiles in the area.

Avon and Somerset Police said the taxi marshal scheme had already been a great success in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour elsewhere in the city.

"Queue jumping has been prevented thereby leaving visitors to Bath with a pleasant experience at the end of the night.

"I am confident that this new initiative will provide the same results in Kingsmead Square," he added.

The service operates between 2200 and 0200 GMT on Friday and Saturday nights.
