Complaint halts council prayers

Winscombe and Sandford Parish Council sign
Prayers will no longer be said at the start of parish council meetings

A Somerset parish council has ended a 115-year tradition of saying Christian prayers at the start of its meeting after receiving a complaint.

Winscombe councillors changed the custom after a woman wrote to express her shock at being asked to stand for prayers at a meeting last month.

In her letter she said society today was "multi-religious".

A spokesman for Winscombe and Sandford Parish Council said the council was for all the community not just Christians.
