Bells help shoppers deter thieves

The bells are being handed out to shoppers across Somerset

Shoppers in Somerset are being given a pair of small bells in an attempt to reduce pick-pocketing.

The bells can be attached to a purse, wallet or mobile phone and make a noise when moved, alerting the owner if a thief attempts to take them from a bag.

Lester Silk, crime reduction officer at Mendip District Council, said: "Purse theft has been on the increase in the Mendip area.

"We hope that the bells will help act as a deterrent to thieves."

Bells were handed out in Frome last week and police officers will be in Shepton Mallet on Friday.

Mendip District Council is working with Avon and Somerset Police on the project.

People in Glastonbury, Street and Wells will also be offered the bells.
