Royal opening for naval display

The Duke of Edinburgh
Prince Philip is opening the display

An exhibition showcasing 100 years of naval aviation has been opened by the Duke of Edinburgh at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Somerset.

Included in the Celebration of Naval Flying exhibition are nine aircraft, one of which - a Short 184 - took part in battle in 1916 during World War I.

Prince Philip met base staff and 250 veterans, as well as some serving personnel, before unveiling a plaque.

A spokesman for the museum in Yeovilton said it was a "big event".

"We are adopting the American interpretation of the word veteran - someone who has served frontline - they don't have to be 60 or 70," he said.

"We have a lot of young veterans coming out... [who] have been on the frontline in places like Iraq and Afghanistan."

The helicopter flown by Prince Andrew during the Falklands conflict will be on display.

The celebration of naval flying coincides with the 100th anniversary of naval aviation.
