Warning after climber is rescued

Brean Down
Coastguards say the rocks at Brean are dangerous

Coastguards who rescued a rock climber from cliffs on Brean Down in Somerset said it was "unbelievable" the man was dressed only in shorts and trainers.

Rescuers were lowered 40ft down the cliffs to the man, who was in his early 20s and from Weston-super-Mare, on Thursday afternoon.

"The man was not equipped for climbing, and did not have proper ropes or safety equipment," a spokesman said.

He was lowered to the ground where he was said to be shaken but unhurt.

It is believed the man had climbed down the cliff and got stuck before calling for help.
