Cash boost for castle restoration

The Museum of Somerset
The Museum of Somerset is due to open in 2011

Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society (SANHS) has given £35,000 towards the Museum of Somerset Project at Taunton Castle.

The cash will be used to help conserve and repair the castle, as well as creating new gallery spaces for natural history and world culture collections.

Building work is on target and the museum is due to open in 2011, an SANHS spokesman has said.

The project is part of a £6.93m scheme to restore the 12th Century castle.

Museum of Somerset project leader Tom Mayberry said: "Somerset County Council is delighted to be working in partnership with SANHS on this prestigious project and we are grateful for its generous donation.

"If it hadn't been for the foresight of SANHS members over 100 years ago, Taunton could have lost its 12th Century castle."
