Protest calls for speed limit cut

Road campaigners
Campaigners said it was a matter of time before someone was killed

A protest march has taken place over the speed limit on a stretch of road in Somerset, after a series of accidents.

Three crashes have occurred on the A356 between Misterton and Crewkerne in the past three weeks.

Residents from the village and town are calling on Somerset County Council to introduce a 20mph limit on the route.

The authority said it could not cut the speed limit without introducing a one-way system - a proposal previously rejected by Crewkerne town council.

Chairman of Misterton Parish Council David Welch said: "We're having a lot of congestion and minor accidents where HGVs knock parts of people's gates and walls down.

"It's only a matter of time before we have a child or person injured and we want some action.

"A 20mph speed limit would be a good start, we'll need more later on."
