New air quality station for city

A new air quality monitoring station is to be installed on one of Bath's most heavily polluted roads.

The new equipment will monitor pollution levels on London Road which are mainly caused by vehicle exhausts.

The council said the number of cars travelling through the city could increase by 14% in 10 years if no action was taken to tackle congestion.

The station will also measure the types of particles which can be deposited in people's lungs causing health problems.

Councillor Charles Gerrish, of Bath and North East Somerset Council, said: "The monitoring of air quality is an important part of Bath and North East Somerset Council building up a picture of how traffic congestion is affecting our local communities.

"Air quality is an issue the council takes extremely seriously, hence our investment in this technology."

The council already has an air quality station on Windsor Bridge, which analyses emissions such as carbon monoxide, benzene, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide.
