Size of shopping centre to double

Plans to double the size of the Quedam shopping centre in Yeovil have been approved by South Somerset council.

Vincent's garage in Silver Street and the multi-storey car park are to be demolished to make way for the scheme.

The new extension will consist of 25 retail units and a new three-storey department store.

The £45m scheme is said to be the biggest development in the Somerset town since the Quedam itself was built in the mid-1980s.

At the same meeting, South Somerset district council deferred an application to build a retirement home on the site of Yeovil cattle market.
