Water firm allays fear over smell

Bristol Water has issued a statement to allay fears over an unpleasant taste or odour in tapwater in the Keynsham area.

It is being caused by a naturally-occurring organic compound called geosmin, which tastes and smells "earthy", according to the firm.

Normally treatment processes ensure it is not noticeable but high rainfall and rotting vegetation has caused higher concentrations, said a spokesman.

Customers are being told there is no need to boil water before drinking.

Water going through Purton Treatment Works is "perfectly normal but the earthy taste is lingering on for a short while in a few areas", the firm said.
