Pier flies Olympic handover flag

The flag ceremony was a "bright end" for the fire-ravaged pier

The Weston Grand Pier in Somerset, has played a role in the Olympic handover.

The pier in Weston-super-Mare was selected as one of the sites to fly a special Olympic handover flag to mark London as the 2012 games host.

A North Somerset council spokesman said the event at the pier was a "bright end" after the pier's pavilion was completely destroyed by fire in July.

Ian Porter, chairman of the North Somerset council, officially hoisted the flag.
