Skateboarders' fact-finding trip

Skaters aged between 10 and 21 are on the fact-finding trip

Somerset skateboarders will visit three skate parks in Bristol before helping design a new park in Glastonbury.

The previous skate park, next to the Morlands Enterprise Park, had to be demolished in June after serious concerns over its condition.

Ramps were in such a poor state Mendip District Council could have faced criminal charges if the park remained open and a skateboarder was injured.

Sixteen young people, aged between 10 and 21, will make the trip.

The trip is among a range of consultation exercises which will take place to determine how the park in Glastonbury will be built. Mendip District Council has already said it will invest double the amount of money spent on the original facility.

"Giving them the chance to visit other concrete skate parks will give them a better understanding of what the council might be able to provide for them in Mendip," said councillor Alistair Glanvile.

"We want to build this park with the interests of skateboarders at the heart, and can only do that by giving them the opportunity to take part in the design process."
