A lifeboat was launched from Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset after concerns were raised of a speedboat drifting with the outgoing tide.
The 21ft (6m) speedboat, with two adults and three children on board, had suffered engine failure, up river from Combwich in the River Parrett.
Burnham lifeboat Staines Whitfield was launched at approximately 2200 BST.
The passengers and the speedboat were transferred safely back to Burnham beach, coastguards said.
A spokesman said the speedboat crew had been properly equipped with flares and safety equipment.
