Sculptors create art from sand

The sand sculptures will be on show until 31 August

Sand sculptors have arrived from all over the world to take part in the 2008 Sand Sculpture Festival in Weston-super-Mare in Somerset.

The artists have one week to turn 360 tonnes of sand from the beach at Weston into sculptures for the festival, which starts on 12 July.

Last year's event attracted 30,000 visitors and the organisers are expecting more people this year.

There will also be a special area for children to make their own sculptures.

Councillor Elfan Ap Rees of North Somerset Council said: "We are very lucky to be hosting this event yet again, which is a reflection of the superb sandcastle-building qualities of Weston beach of course.

"I certainly look forward to seeing the results once the build is completed and the designs unveiled."

Four of the sculptors will stay on to create a final piece after the event has opened to visitors. Members of the public can watch them at work from 12 July until 18 July.

The sand sculptures will be on show at the beach until 31 August.
