The four got into difficulty as their dinghy approached the weir

Four youngsters were rescued from the River Avon after their dinghy capsized going over Bathampton weir in Bath.

The three girls and one youth, aged between 16 and 20, managed to swim to a small island but became stranded.

They were pulled to safety on a rescue sledge by fire crews and were treated in hospital for mild hypothermia.

Their dinghy, which had floated on, was later recovered by another boat owner. A fire service spokesman said the four were lucky not to have been hurt.

She said: "Avon Fire Service would like to highlight the importance of taking care on the water as it can prove dangerous.

"Fortunately, no-one was hurt in this incident, but it could have been much worse."
