The Post Office is closing 62 branches in Bristol and Somerset

Post Office Ltd has announced that 62 branches are to close in Somerset and Bristol after a public consultation.

Three post offices in Bath which were originally proposed for closure will remain open.

Tony Jones, from Post Office Ltd, said: "We believe the amended plan offers our customers the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future."

The first closures start next month and the Post Office claim that over 99% of local people will see no change.

The MP for Weston-super-Mare John Penrose said: "Post Offices are the heart of our communities and these closures will be a hammer blow to community life. "

The decisions were reached after a six-week public consultation during which Post Office Ltd received about 3,800 responses and attended 18 meetings with customers.

The consumer body, Postwatch, verified the correct consultation procedures were followed and confirmed that it will not ask for any decision to be further reviewed by Post Office Ltd.
