Mystery after man seen in river

Police and firefighters have been searching the River Avon in Bath after reports a man was seen in the water in the early hours of Saturday.

Emergency services were called to the river bank behind Bath Spa railway station but were unable to locate him.

Rescue teams resumed the search on Saturday morning and searched between Pulteney Bridge and Twerton.

Police say they do not know if the man managed to get out of the water safely or is still missing.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "We are keen to speak with anyone who has a friend or relative who failed to return home this morning.

"Equally if anyone got into difficulty by falling in the river bur didn't report the incident to police would they please contact us."

Anyone who saw the man in the water near Spring Gardens at 0140 BST on 17 May is asked to call police.
