It is believed the man was fishing off the causeway at Birnbeck
A search for an angler washed into the sea has resumed.

Emergency services searched the Bristol Channel near Weston-super-Mare on Thursday afternoon after being alerted by two members of the public.

Coastguards from Clevedon and Weston searched the shore while two lifeboats and two helicopters were also involved.

Avon and Somerset Police said reports of the man being washed out to sea coincided with reports of a Weston man in his 20s going missing.

A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said it was believed the man was fishing off the causeway at Birnbeck, in North Somerset.

He said: "At 2.15pm we received a 999 call from a member of the public reporting that they'd seen someone being washed into the sea from the causeway.

"We received another 999 call from a member of the public who also saw a man being washed off into the sea off the causeway.

"He was wearing black clothing and holding what appeared to be a fishing rod."

The search was stood down at 1845 GMT and resumed at first light on Friday.
