Swimmers fight to keep pool open
Members of a Somerset swimming club have organised a petition to try to change a council's mind over proposals to close the pool they use.

Sarah Pusill from Burnham-on-Sea swimming club said its 425 members were devastated at the news the pool could close to help council finances.

"If the pool closes so will the club. Pools in Cheddar and Bridgwater have no spaces so we would have to fold."

Sedgemoor District Council said it was looking at ways to keep the pool open.

'Emotive subject'

It said in order to meet its budget, the council's executive proposed that Burnham Pool would close with effect from 31 March 2008.

"We realise that this is a very emotive subject and it has been a very difficult decision for the council to even suggest closure, but its position as a non-statutory service makes it an option that needs to be considered.

"However, we are actively seeking ways to keep the pool open.

"The capital receipts from the sale of the site will be ring-fenced for the residents of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge which may go towards alternative swimming provision," the council spokesman added.

Burnham Pool was built in 1974, making 2008 its 34th year of operation, nearly 10 years longer than the expected life of 25 years for a pool of its size
