Lollipop campaign to cut speeding

Drivers face a fine if they do not stop for a crossing patrol
Efforts are being made to tackle drivers who speed past schools to avoid being stopped by a crossing patrol.

Lollipop staff in Bath are handing out special bookmarks to pedestrians and motorists urging them to "be aware" at school crossing points.

"Many drivers dread being stopped by a school crossing patrol," said city council patrol coordinator Beryl Miles.

"They fear they'll be caught up in lengthy delays and often accelerate past."

She said failure to stop for a school crossing patrol could lead to a £1,000 fine and three points on a licence.

The campaign follows a clampdown by Avon and Somerset Police on drivers who park dangerously outside the city's schools.
