Student's disco design is winner

Tom Stevens' winning designs were modelled on the catwalk

A student has won the Clothes Show Live Young Designer of the Year award with 1970s-inspired disco designs.

Students from fashion colleges across the country were asked to bring disco fever into the modern day.

Tom Stevens, 21, a Somerset College of Arts and Technology student, produced vibrant clothes which dazzled judge and British designer Tristan Webber.

"I'm in total shock. I can't believe I won," said Mr Stevens, who comes from Chulmleigh in north Devon.

'Huge potential'

Mr Stevens, who is a third year student on the college's BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles course, found out he had been selected from more than 300 entrants as one of nine finalists on his 21st birthday in November.

"I'm absolutely thrilled because the standard was so high and it was a really tough competition," he said.

In addition to being crowned Young Designer of the Year, he also won £2,000, a week's work experience with Tristan Webber and £1,000 for the college.

He said: "It's going to be an amazing experience working with Tristan and I'm really excited."

Speaking after the competition, Tristan Webber said: "I think Tom shows huge potential and I look forward to seeing him working in London."
