Legionnaires' scare closes hotel
Legionella bacteria
The legionella bacteria is found in mist from contaminated water
A Somerset hotel has been closed as an investigation into an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease goes on.

The investigation has found that two elderly people, confirmed with the disease, stayed at the Grand Atlantic Hotel in Weston-super-Mare.

Water samples from the hotel showed high levels of the legionella bacteria, said North Somerset Council.

The hotel management agreed to close the premises on Friday, 10 November, as the investigation continues.

The two infected hotel guests, from North London and Gloucestershire, are recovering following treatment at the Royal Free Hospital, London, and the Gloucester Royal Infirmary.

The guest from London stayed at the hotel in August while the other stayed there in October.

Chris Gwenlan of North Somerset Council, said: "Legionnaires' disease can be a serious infection for older people, so it's important that any cases are thoroughly investigated to find any potential source."
